2000/2001 - What happened next

The wet autumn caused a real problem for the league. To take our team as an example, at the end of December we still had 18 league games to play.

The Sunday League called a meeting in early January (I think) with all the club secretaries to discuss what was to happen. When the meeting was held there were only something like 16 Sundays left before the end of April.

The decision was taken to scrap the season and start again.

So all those league matches you've read about since September, forget them. Technically they didn't happen.

In its place there was to be a league where everybody played each other once. If I remember right it didn't go well. I believe we lost all 11 games.

That at least meant that the team could re-set. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there was a new sponsorship with The Dolphin and Gary took over the running of the side.

Payney led the club for about ten years and reached two Chairman's Cup finals.
