(Profiles for the players who were with us in the 1999/2000 season and haven't previously been mentioned in the Moving On series. League games unless stated))
Mark Astley
Sorry, I don't remember Mark. He started in the 9-2 thrashing by Compton Welding in September 1999 but didn't feature again until the end of the following January. Two starts, four appearances as sub. No goals, MVP or Spoons.
Phil Ausden
Signed towards the end of the 1998/99 season 'Dollar' was a very useful striker and linked well with Watty in the few games they played together.
1998/99 - 1 start, 1 as sub, 1 goal
1999/2000 - 14 league starts, 2 as sub, 12 goals + 2 cup starts, 1 goal, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
Darren Beasant
Another player from 1999/2000 I can't place. Played in midfield or defence in the latter stages of the season. Five starts, three sub appearances, one Spoon
Scott Carpenter
One of seven players who appeared in 80 or more games but injuries probably robbed us of more Carpo. Who that saw it can forget the head cut and turban v The Grapes? Or puking up before a game against The Plough and recovering enough to clear a shot off the line? Who that heard him can forget his bellowed 'encouragement'?
1994/95 - 8 league starts, 1 cup start, 1 Spoon
1995/96 - 15 league starts, 2 as sub, 1 goal, 2 Cup appearances, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
1996/97 - 19 league starts, 2 cup starts, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
1997/98 - 19 league starts, 1 MVP
1998/99 - 4 league starts, 1 goal, 1 cup start, 2 as sub
1999/2000 - 5 league starts, 3 as sub, 3 Cup starts, 1 Spoon
Paul Cook
Composed centre-half who joined in the fourth season. Unfortunately Cooky had glass ankles so we didn't see as much of him as he or we would have liked. Always one of our biggest cheerleaders when he wasn't able to play. (Supporter cheerleader, not with pom-poms and that.)
1997/98 - 11 starts, 3 as sub, 1 goal, 1 MVP, 3 Spoons
1998/99 - 11 league starts, 2 as sub, 2 goals, 4 cup starts, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
1999/2000 - 14 league starts, 1 goal, 2 Cup starts, 3 MVPs, 1 Spoon (Joint Player of the Season)
Mike Cox
Cocker's silky Brazilian skills graced the team from 96/97. Confident on the ball (or maybe a bit greedy depending on your point of view) Mikey won the Golden Boot in his second season but never hit those heights in front of goal after that. Possibly tried too hard to repeat that feat. Never won MVP, which seems harsh.
1996/97 - 13 league starts, 7 as sub, 4 goals, 2 cup starts, 1 as sub, 3 Spoons
1997/98 - 18 starts, 1 as sub, 10 goals, 3 Spoons
1998/99 - 13 league starts, 3 as sub, 5 goals, 2 cup starts, 1 as sub, 1 goal, 3 Spoons
1999/2000 - 6 league starts, 3 as sub, 4 goals, 2 cup starts
Paul Garratt
Never made the transition from the five-a-side goal to the bigger version and a shoulder injury that ruled him out for a season came as a relief to the back four. Plodded about up front when we were short and managed to score three goals somehow before illness meant he didn't get ideas above his station.
1994/95 - 13 league starts, 2 Cup starts, 1 MVP, 3 Spoons
1995/96 - 10 league starts, 1 as sub, 2 Cup starts, 1 MVP, 3 Spoons
1996/97 - 1 cup sub appearance
1997/98 - 7 starts, 4 as sub, 2 goals, 3 MVP, 4 Spoons
1998/99 - 1 sub appearance, 1 goal
1999/2000 - 4 league sub appearances, 1 cup start, 2 Spoons
Stuart Gould
Manager. Leader. Legend. From naked team talks to sticking his fingers up opponents noses, Sipper led from the front. Well, midfield, and later defence to tell the truth. Injury in the last two seasons (a broken foot in a nightclub incident if I remember rightly - the tabloids would have a field day if that happened now) probably stopped any faint hopes of us getting close to a runners-up medal.
1994/95 - 17 league starts, 14 goals, 1 cup start, 1 goal, 3 MVP, 2 Spoons
1995/96 - 18 league starts, 10 goals, 3 cup starts, 2 MVP
1996/97 - 22 league starts, 11 goals, 2 cup starts, 1 as sub, 4 MVP, 5 Spoons
1997/98 - 16 starts, 1 as sub, 5 goals, 3 MVP, 3 Spoons
1998/99 - 9 league starts, 2 cup starts, 1 MVP
1999/2000 - 10 starts, 3 as sub, 1 goal 1 MVP
Kevin Gunning
A pacy winger in his youth, knee injuries, age and extra timber led 'Big Kev' to turn into a central defender. His aerial prowess made him a danger at both ends of the pitch. Shouts of "Big Kev's ball" alerted his defensive partners to the fact that a shout of "over me" could be following. Missed the 97/98 season (injury?) and appearances drop off after that.
1994/95 - 22 league starts, 14 goals, two cup cup starts, 1 goal, 3 MVP, 1 Spoon
1995/96 - 22 league starts, 8 goals, 3 cup starts, 2 MVP, 4 Spoons
1996/97 - 22 league starts, 4 goals, 3 cup starts, 3 MVP, 2 Spoons
1998/99 - 9 league starts, 2 goals, 1 cup start, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
1999/2000 - 2 league starts, 1 goal, 1 cup start
