Nationwide end our interest in the Cup

19 November 2000, Knockout Cup

KMLC Woodshaw 1 Nationwide Life 5

Nationwide Life knocked us out of the Chairman's Cup last season (3-2) as a Division 8 side and they were clearly a team on the up and too good for us on the day.

Editor's Note - 2000/2001

Like I said previously, I hadn't intended to cover this season but I'm back by popular demand.

The notes I'm working on are sketchier than ever. I can give you opponents, score and team - scorers, MVP and Spoons I have no idea.

We'll just go with what I've got for as long as I've got - starting in September...

Something else that happened this summer

We were hoping to change home grounds before the 2000/01 season.

We'd been based at Mannington throughout our Sunday existence but the standard of pitches and changing facilities weren't always the best.

We fancied a change and were interested in playing our home games at Ballard's Ash. It had good pitches, good changing rooms and car park and was close to our new club sponsor for the after game pint, sausage and chips gathering.

Here's where things get a bit hazy.

I think we had agreement from Wootton Bassett Council to take up a home pitch at Ballard's Ash but the Swindon Sunday league vetoed the move and we stayed at Mannington. (It might have been the other way round - it was 20 years ago.)

Either way, it was a blow. This decision (and terrible weather during the autumn) caused an unfortunate rift in our relationship with the new sponsors and ultimately put us on a slippery slope (metaphorically at least.)

2000 AGM - Treasurer's Report

(Kevin missed the AGM but left this report/resignation letter)

The club, unfortunately turned in playing loss of £252.88 for the season which was partly offset by the successful Christmas 'do' at the Pattern Store.

It costs the club

£45 for Pitches
£14 for referee - A total of £59 for each home game

We receive a total of £66.00 for two games in Match Fees, excluding Fines (which were minimal this year)

This leaves us £7 every two games to cover league fees, insurance, kit washing, balls etc, which clearly is not enough
I therefore propose that for 2000/2001 Fees are

Signing On £2 (New player : £5)
Match Fees £4
Fines £1

and that they should commence with the friendlies, which historically have been a good fundraising start to the season.

I also encourage everyone to assume financial responsibility for the club
The players must ensure they pay their fees every week, (with no hiding, hoping Justin does not ask)

Then, those collecting money should ensure it is given to the treasurer promptly

It is pleasing that The Woodshaw has kindly sponsored us for the coming season and agreed to purchase the team a new kit

Your new treasurer will be Ian Merry

Thank you and goodnight.

2000 AGM - The main points

There were apologies from Ian Merry, Gary Payne and Dollar.

Kev G continued as chairman, Peej as secretary while Ian Merry took over as Treasurer.

The chairman congratulated the team on a successful season which ended in promotion and the Division 5 Fair play award.

The Treasurers Report will be covered in a separate post.

Signing-on fees were set at £5 for new players
Match fees were £4 and £2 for substitutes.

There was a two-week rule (for payment I'm guessing.)

The team to be renamed KMLC Woodshaw.

Spoons vote should be football first.

Upcoming friendly dates were set for Sat 5 August, Tuesday 8 August, Saturday 12 August with a tournament on Saturday 19 August.

Stu will continue as manager.

Someone needs to buy an armband.

Thanks were placed on record to Derrick Newman and Co.

(The last message is somewhat cryptic but I think says 'Trawlerman 8.0 am')

Kenilworth Cup 2 - New Facts Emerge

My thanks to Chris 'Howler' Howell for turning up a new document for our archive.

It's the itinerary for our trip to Blackpool and Preston in May 1991 for the second Kenilworth Cup game.

Editor's note - What happens next

I had intended to bring the blog to a halt here. For me, this is when the 'early years' stop. A couple of reasons:

1) The end of our sponsorship with Derrick Newman & co. - their generous investment helped to get us off the ground.

2) The make-up of the team starts to change here. As the 'early intake' got older and their priorities changed with families and work, we needed more than friends, friends of friends, former teammates and colleagues to flesh out and improve the squad. The net had to trawl wider and some players came in that didn't have that Kylie ethic (which was, effectively, 'no tossers'.)

There's another reason that, you might remember, will become clear in a few months.

However, due to popular demand* I'm going to carry on for a bit. There will be some posts about what happened over the summer of 2000 and team line-ups from the aborted 2000/2001 season. As that season was expunged from the records there will be no stats from those games.

When that's done I'll publish the overall club stats and the player profiles of those I haven't yet covered during the previous seasons.

I'll be back with you in late July I reckon.

We go again!

* Thanks Gary and Rich!

Joint MVPs this season - Cook and Hobbs. (They sound like the main characters in a restaurant-based detective series!)  It would suggest we had a lot of defending to do.

Andy 'The Eagle' Humphries was our overall spoon winner this year, just seeing off the challenge from Steve Hales.
