Player stats part three - R-W

Rich Rees

Tremendous fun to have about the place, Richie was a more than decent midfielder and goal threat and someone who always seemed on the verge of taking Spoons away from the rest of us. Perhaps followed in Gazza's footsteps a bit too much with the re-fuelling methods but we wouldn't change him.

1997/98 - 13 starts, 1 as sub, 7 goals, 2 MVP, 5 Spoons
1998/99 - 12 league starts, 2 goals, 3 cup starts, 1 as sub, 6 Spoons
1999/2000 - 13 league starts, 2 goals, 2 cup starts, 1 goal, 2 MVP, (no Spoons!)

Mark Sharp

Sharpy will live in Kylie legend for being the first of the team to be sent off (for a sly punch against some Stratton Red Eagles whippersnapper.) Should be remembered for being willing to be called on for a few minutes run-out as and when he was needed season in, season out.

1994/95 - 5 league starts, 6 as sub, 1 goal, 2 cup starts, 2 Spoons
1995/96 - 1 cup sub appearance
1997/98 - 1 start
1998/99 - 1 sub appearance
1999/2000 - 2 sub appearances

Chris Smedley

'Mr Reliable' in midfield, Smedders was with us from the start. Had the great combination of cultured feet and not being afraid to get stuck in. Would probably have got more goals if Gould and Merry hadn't hogged the set-pieces around the box but did have the party trick of scoring from corners every now and again.

1994/95 - 15 league starts, 5 goals, 1 cup start, 2 MVP
1995/96 - 18 league starts, 2 goals, 3 cup starts, 1 MVP
1996/97 - 13 league starts, 5 as sub, 3 goals, 2 cup starts, 2 Spoons
1997/98 - 12 starts, 3 as sub, 1 MVP
1998/99 - 9 league starts, 4 as sub, 2 cup starts, 2 as sub, 1 goal, 1 MVP
1999/2000 - 8 league starts, 2 as sub, 1 goal, 2 cup starts, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon

Simon Swatridge

Absolute electric-paced goal machine in the first season and terrorised everyone he played against. Perhaps didn't dovetail as well with Watty as we'd have liked so he sacrificed goals from his game to drop into midfield and set other people up instead. Injury deprived us of his services for most of the last two seasons. I'll leave you to guess which bit of him was injured.

1994/95 - 20 league starts, 26 goals, 1 cup start, 5 MVP, 3 Spoons (Player of the Season)
1995/96 - 18 starts, 4 goals, 4 MVP, 2 Spoons (Player of the Season)
1996/97 - 15 league starts, 1 sub, 5 goals, 2 cup starts, 1 goal, 4 MVP, 1 Spoon
1997/98 - 11 starts, 1 as sub, 3 MVP, 1 Spoon
1999/2000 - 5 league starts, 2 cup starts, 1 goal, 2 MVP, 1 Spoons

Ben Warr

Another stalwart from the early days, 'Boom Boom' covered most of the outfield positions in his career at some point or other. That versatility probably hindered him in nailing down a regular place as the seasons went on and I think he tried to retire on various occasions before he finally exited the Sunday morning stage.

1994/95 - 14 league starts, 1 as sub, 3 goals, 1 cup start, 1 as sub, 3 MVP, 1 Spoon
1995/96 - 11 league starts, 1 as sub, 2 cup starts, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
1996/97 - 5 league starts, 4 as sub, 3 goals, 3 cup starts, 1 goal, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
1997/98 - 3 league starts, 1 as sub, 1 MVP
1999/2000 - 4 league starts, 3 as sub, 2 MVP

Mark Watling

Joined in the second season and was our top scorer at the end of this period in the club. God knows how many he would have got if he'd played in the Division 8 side but having said that seemed to get better as he got older. Mixed pace and power to devastating effect and his goalscoring run in the 1999/2000 season is a thing of wonder.

1995/96 - 8 league starts, 1 as sub, 8 goals, 1 cup start, 1 goal, 3 MVP, 1 Spoon
1996/97 - 18 league starts, 1 as sub, 12 goals, 3 cup starts, 2 goals, 3 MVP, 1 Spoon
1997/98 - 12 starts, 8 goals, 4 MVP (Player of the Season)
1998/99 - 16 league starts, 13 goals, 4 cup starts, 2 goals, 4 MVP, 2 Spoons
1999/2000 - 12 league starts, 16 goals, 1 cup start. 2 MVP

Adie Winters

Joined in the 97/98 season and became a feature at full back over the next couple of years. Embarrassingly, I can't remember anything else.

1997/98 - 1 start, 1 as sub
1998/99 - 11 league starts, 3 as sub, 1 goal, 2 cup starts, 2 as sub, 1 MVP
1999/2000 - 18 league starts, 1 as sub, 3 cup starts, 2 MVP, 2 Spoons

Player stats part two - H-P

Steve Hales

'Forest' (one r or two?) was a great addition from the 1998/99 campaign. He brought energy to the midfield, banter to the dressing room and masking tape to Big Al's personalised number plate. A bit of a surprise he didn't get more goals as he was all about those box-to-box runs.

1998/99 - 10 league starts, 1 as sub, 2 goals, 3 cup starts, 1 MVP, 1 Spoons
1999/2000 - 20 league starts, 3 goals, 3 cup starts, 2 MVP, 3 Spoons

Martin Harries

We probably never saw the best of 'Chopper' as his knees were past their sell-by date before he joined. Whether in defensive midfield or centre of defence he had great positional sense, chiefly to help him not run anywhere.

1997/98 - 12 league starts, 1 as sub, 1 goal, 1 MVP
1998/99 - 2 league starts, 1 cup start
1999/2000 - 5 league starts, 1 as sub, 1 cup sub appearance, 2 Spoons

Phil Hobbs

It's hard to think now but we weren't quite sure of Hobbit's best position when he joined. He did ok at left midfield but came into his own when moved to left back. Must have been one of the best tacklers in club history and added a big and fun presence to the dressing room.

1996/97 - 21 league starts, 5 goals, 1 cup sub appearance, 1 MVP, 3 Spoons
1997/98 - 11 starts, 1 as sub, 1 Spoon
1998/99 - 9 league starts, 2 as sub, 1 goal, 2 cup sub appearances, 2 MVP 1 Spoon
1999/2000 - 18 league starts, 2 cup starts, 3 MVP (Joint Player of the Season)

Andy Humphries

Brought in to fill the troublesome goalkeeping spot there's an argument that Andy was the best. Of a not very good bunch. Put his drinking career ahead of his 'keeping career at times. Not always the best with criticism, he ran around a bit on the pitch too in his second season, possibly due to injury or Powelly keeping him out of the side.

1998/99 - 11 league starts, 1 cup start, 2 MVP, 2 Spoons
1999/2000 - 17 league starts, 3 as sub, 3 cup starts, 2 MVP, 4 Spoons

Ian Merry

The kind of Steve McManaman lookalike when he was younger was the Kylie top appearance maker. A wide midfielder/second striker he twice hit double figures for goals in a season. Player of the season in 1996/97. Slowed down and got a bit stroppier later into his career but so did most of us.

1994/95 - 24 league starts, 13 goals, 2 cup starts, 3 MVP, 3 Spoons
1995/96 - 18 league starts, 4 goals, 1 cup start, 3 MVP, 2 Spoons
1996/97 - 23 league starts, 13 goals, 3 cup starts, 5 MVP 1 Spoons (Player of the Season)
1997/98 - 16 league starts, 7 goals, 2 MVP, 1 Spoon
1998/99 - 4 league starts, 5 as sub, 3 cup appearances, 2 MVP, 1 Spoon
1999/2000 - 16 league starts, 3 goals, 2 cup starts, 2 MVP, 2 Spoons

Gary Payne

Calm and classy midfielder and centre defender when he had to be, Payney didn't get many goals but was just as happy winning the ball, bursting forward and playing killer passes. More importantly, took the team on after the early years when it was threatening to fall apart and led the team to two Chairman's Trophy finals. Hats off to you sir!

1996/97 - 19 league starts, 1 as sub, four goals, 1 cup start, 3 MVP, 1 Spoon
1997/98 - 12 league starts, 1 as sub, 2 goals, 2 MVP, 1 Spoon
1998/99 - 14 league starts, 3 cup starts, 5 MVP, 3 Spoons (Player of the Season)
1999/2000 - 16 starts, four goals, 2 MVP, 1 Spoon

Justin Powell

Brought in to wear the gloves in 1997/98 who can forget his realistic Superman impressions? Not the defenders who played with him, that's for sure. I do him a disservice, he wasn't all that bad. Was also a presence when he played up front, finding the net three times.

1997/98 - 10 starts, 1 MVP, 2 Spoons
1998/99 - 6 league starts, 2 as sub, 3 cup starts, 1 MVP
1999/2000 - 9 league starts, 9 as sub, 3 goals 2 cup starts, 1 as sub, 2 Spoons

Player stats part one - A-G

(Profiles for the players who were with us in the 1999/2000 season and haven't previously been mentioned in the Moving On series. League games unless stated))

Mark Astley

Sorry, I don't remember Mark. He started in the 9-2 thrashing by Compton Welding in September 1999 but didn't feature again until the end of the following January. Two starts, four appearances as sub. No goals, MVP or Spoons.

Phil Ausden

Signed towards the end of the 1998/99 season 'Dollar' was a very useful striker and linked well with Watty in the few games they played together.

1998/99 - 1 start, 1 as sub, 1 goal
1999/2000 - 14 league starts, 2 as sub, 12 goals + 2 cup starts, 1 goal, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon

Darren Beasant

Another player from 1999/2000 I can't place. Played in midfield or defence in the latter stages of the season. Five starts, three sub appearances, one Spoon

Scott Carpenter

One of seven players who appeared in 80 or more games but injuries probably robbed us of more Carpo. Who that saw it can forget the head cut and turban v The Grapes? Or puking up before a game against The Plough and recovering enough to clear a shot off the line? Who that heard him can forget his bellowed 'encouragement'?

1994/95 - 8 league starts, 1 cup start, 1 Spoon
1995/96 - 15 league starts, 2 as sub, 1 goal, 2 Cup appearances, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
1996/97 - 19 league starts, 2 cup starts, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
1997/98 - 19 league starts, 1 MVP
1998/99 - 4 league starts, 1 goal, 1 cup start, 2 as sub
1999/2000 - 5 league starts, 3 as sub, 3 Cup starts, 1 Spoon

Paul Cook

Composed centre-half who joined in the fourth season. Unfortunately Cooky had glass ankles so we didn't see as much of him as he or we would have liked. Always one of our biggest cheerleaders when he wasn't able to play. (Supporter cheerleader, not with pom-poms and that.)

1997/98 - 11 starts, 3 as sub, 1 goal, 1 MVP, 3 Spoons
1998/99 - 11 league starts, 2 as sub, 2 goals, 4 cup starts, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
1999/2000 - 14 league starts, 1 goal, 2 Cup starts, 3 MVPs, 1 Spoon (Joint Player of the Season)

Mike Cox

Cocker's silky Brazilian skills graced the team from 96/97. Confident on the ball (or maybe a bit greedy depending on your point of view) Mikey won the Golden Boot in his second season but never hit those heights in front of goal after that. Possibly tried too hard to repeat that feat. Never won MVP, which seems harsh.

1996/97 - 13 league starts, 7 as sub, 4 goals, 2 cup starts, 1 as sub, 3 Spoons
1997/98 - 18 starts, 1 as sub, 10 goals, 3 Spoons
1998/99 - 13 league starts, 3 as sub, 5 goals, 2 cup starts, 1 as sub, 1 goal, 3 Spoons
1999/2000 - 6 league starts, 3 as sub, 4 goals, 2 cup starts

Paul Garratt

Never made the transition from the five-a-side goal to the bigger version and a shoulder injury that ruled him out for a season came as a relief to the back four. Plodded about up front when we were short and managed to score three goals somehow before illness meant he didn't get ideas above his station.

1994/95 - 13 league starts, 2 Cup starts, 1 MVP, 3 Spoons
1995/96 - 10 league starts, 1 as sub, 2 Cup starts, 1 MVP, 3 Spoons
1996/97 - 1 cup sub appearance
1997/98 - 7 starts, 4 as sub, 2 goals, 3 MVP, 4 Spoons
1998/99 - 1 sub appearance, 1 goal
1999/2000 - 4 league sub appearances, 1 cup start, 2 Spoons

Stuart Gould

Manager. Leader. Legend. From naked team talks to sticking his fingers up opponents noses, Sipper led from the front. Well, midfield, and later defence to tell the truth. Injury in the last two seasons (a broken foot in a nightclub incident if I remember rightly - the tabloids would have a field day if that happened now) probably stopped any faint hopes of us getting close to a runners-up medal.

1994/95 - 17 league starts, 14 goals, 1 cup start, 1 goal, 3 MVP, 2 Spoons
1995/96 - 18 league starts, 10 goals, 3 cup starts, 2 MVP
1996/97 - 22 league starts, 11 goals, 2 cup starts, 1 as sub, 4 MVP, 5 Spoons
1997/98 - 16 starts, 1 as sub, 5 goals, 3 MVP, 3 Spoons
1998/99 - 9 league starts, 2 cup starts, 1 MVP
1999/2000 - 10 starts, 3 as sub, 1 goal 1 MVP

Kevin Gunning

A pacy winger in his youth, knee injuries, age and extra timber led 'Big Kev' to turn into a central defender. His aerial prowess made him a danger at both ends of the pitch. Shouts of "Big Kev's ball" alerted his defensive partners to the fact that a shout of "over me" could be following. Missed the 97/98 season (injury?) and appearances drop off after that.

1994/95 - 22 league starts, 14 goals, two cup cup starts, 1 goal, 3 MVP, 1 Spoon
1995/96 - 22 league starts, 8 goals, 3 cup starts, 2 MVP, 4 Spoons
1996/97 - 22 league starts, 4 goals, 3 cup starts, 3 MVP, 2 Spoons
1998/99 - 9 league starts, 2 goals, 1 cup start, 1 MVP, 1 Spoon
1999/2000 - 2 league starts, 1 goal, 1 cup start
